Statistics tell us that an average of 80 percent of New Year’s resolutions fail by February. Why? One thought is because many of them are based on unrealistic expectations.
If you’re already dealing with pregnancy distress, postpartum depression/anxiety, infertility or loss, why would you set yourself up for disappointment? Instead, consider making some New Year’s resolutions that are easy to keep and help you both inside and out.
Resolve to be kinder… to yourself. The Golden Rule is “treat others how you would like to be treated,” but really, do you treat yourself well? If you’re like many women, you’re harder on yourself than you are on others. Try being kind to yourself and see how it changes your world view. Experts suggest some easy ways to get started, including: carving out some time for yourself; forgiving yourself for past mistakes; and being mindful of your own pain and experiences.
Resolve to say “no, thank you.” Whether you work or stay home, your to-do list probably looks – and feels – a mile long. This year, consider practicing saying “no, thank you” when a task might be too much for you. This is easier said than done, but with some practice, it will help you to keep your commitments manageable and your stress levels down.
Resolve to seek help (if needed). None of us live in a silo – we all need help from time to time. Whether it’s childcare help, counseling, a friendly ear, or more, this year allow yourself to seek help without guilt or negative self-talk. And, when you can, be helpful to others to pay it forward.
Resolve to try something new. Whether it’s a class at the local gym or a new dish to cook, make 2019 the year that you’re open to trying something new. You can really get into it by keeping a journal of all the new things you try or cataloging on social media.
Resolve to stop comparing. If you’re like most people, you compare yourself to others continuously. Whether it’s in child rearing, career, relationship status – life can feel like a continuous competition. This year, do you best to leave comparisons in the past and embrace that each of us are on our own individual journeys.
This New Year’s, consider making resolutions that are attainable, relevant and feed your soul.
